Everyone has one plant in their garden that they consider their ‘baby’. This plant gets a little extra attention and love from the gardener, and in return, the plant blooms its lovely flowers for the gardener to enjoy. I am no different than the everyday gardener. I love all my flowers, but there’s one particular blossom that really has my heart. What is the reason for this? This flower only blooms once a year, but when it does, it is a sight that every gardener should witness at least once in their lifetime.

It’s called a moon bloomer, commonly referred to as the night bloomer. You may have heard of it, but if you haven’t, the flower blooms just once a year and this happens during the night. Some believe that the plant only blooms when the moon is full, but I’ve witnessed mine bloom without a full moon, so I question that. The flower has a romantic reputation because many people do not have the chance to witness the flower during its peak.

The moon bloomer also has a short lifespan, so once it blooms; it quickly withers away and dies. You have to witness it the exact moment it blooms, in order to truly witness the beauty of the moment. I think that every gardener should have at least once moon bloomer, and have the chance to witness this rarity at least once.
