Longing for spring flowers

If you’re anything like me, the winter is a wonderful time. It’s a nice change to see a white blanket of snow covering the ground once a year. But, it gets old rather quickly. I feel like January is about the last month I can tolerate without my flowers. Gardening is one of my favorite hobbies. In the winter months I find myself visiting the local flower shop every other day to find something to fill my home with a flowery fragrance.

Even though I can purchase some flowers when my craving get out of control, there is nothing like the first sign of spring. It automatically brings a smile to my face and I break out the gardening gloves and get planting. Do you find yourself counting down the days of spring xome early January? Well here are some things you can do to make the time go faster and fill your planting needs.

Using Tarragon

Besides my flower garden, I have a large herb garden that I am quite proud of. I grow a variety of herbs, not only for myself, but for my family and friends as well. Of all of my different herbs, I have an absolute favorite that I truly look forward to each year. Some of you may have heard of it, while others may have not- but anyway, it is called Tarragon and it is absolutely delightful.

North American Butterfly Weed

When you think of a milkweed plant, something vibrant and almost tropical-looking might not come to mind, but in the case of the butterfly weed, you might just make an exception. This plant is strikingly orange and bright, but perhaps the best reason to keep the milkweed is its sweet nectar. The plant is a huge attraction to helpful honey bees as well as pretty garden guests, like many different varieties of butterflies and hummingbirds.

Nodding Onions of Chicago

Though the plants may sound as if they are assenting flowers out of Underland, these flowers are light purple with small black seeds inside them. They are considered to be nodding plants due to the fact that their flowers are so heavy, causing the stems themselves to bob up and down, as if they are nodding.

Nodding onions are not vastly widespread in Illinois, though they are native and can be found throughout the state. The plant’s leaves are solid, flat, and arranged in a downward pattern.
